Would you like to commission an artwork that is truly special? I am available to hand carve your special occasion serving platter that combines real function and my personal artistic vision. Such a piece will be appreciated for it’s usefulness during a special occasion, and also take its place in your art collection.

I have a very limited supply (5 flitches, only) of air dried Mississippi sassafras in widths from 19 to 23 inches and lengths ranging from 24 to 49 inches. These flitches, which I have kept in air-dried storage for over ten years, have been reserved for commission projects only. They will make very special serving platters. (Two or three of these are also suitable to use as seating for a rustic Windsor armchair, or one of my Hearth Chairs.)

Commissioned bowls can be created with one to six or more hollows. As the purchaser, you are welcome to specify which flitch is used, the number of hollows and their approximate sizes. I can also work with wood that you may already have, such as a log section from a favorite yard tree that needs to be harvested.

The price range for commissioned work using this wood is $2500 – $6000. I can also create custom work at a smaller, less expensive scale.

Inventory of Sassafras Reserve Flitches
(All dimensions are approximate. The photos are of the underside of each piece.)

Number 1. 2-1/8 x 19 x 24 inches. Some punky sapwood on one side. (This will be stabilized and should not present a problem.) The other side combines gnarly cambium and some sound bark. The heartwood is excellent.

Number 2. 2-1/4 x 20 x 32 inches. Some good bark on the left side; fine bark on the right side. The heartwood is clear and beautiful.

Number 3. 2-1/4 x 21 x 33 inches. Nice bark combined with gnarly cambium surface on both sides. There are pith checks at both ends (both extending inwards about 4 inches) which could be sawed off or filled. Otherwise the heartwood is very rare, premium quality.

Number 4. 2-3/8 x 22 x 34 inches. The major pith crack running the full length (on the bottom side) will require 2-4 inlaid butterfly patches. Or, this flitch can be split into two lengths of approximately equal width to create a pair of elongated servers with any number of hollows.

Number 5. 2-3/4 x 23 x 49 inches. The “Master Flitch.” Pith check on the bottom side will require several butterfly inlays. A very stable piece, with beautiful heartwood. This elegant flitch is also available as the seat for a rustic Windsor settee.
